I think...

...it's time to make some chocolate chip cookies. I believe I'm off to get some ingredients.
xochitl: (Kitteh!)
Now that I've gotten the oven working, I'd like to start using the stupid thing. Share with me, if you would, recipes for one or two of your favorite baked things (biscuits [dampers], cookies [biscuits], muffins, breads, cakes, pies, whatever). Doesn't matter how simple or complicated it is, and you can give me units in metric or imperial.

Thanks!

So now that things are beginning to settle, time to start properly posting. For now I'll aim for once a week.

It appears that I am, indeed, posting this from home.

No, seriously.

Installing a wireless modem/router for DSL service is just a tad more complicated than it was via Verizon in the US...but at least I do believe I'm on...
xochitl: (music)
--in theory, there is a wireless router modem on its way from some warehouse in possibly Melbourne over to Brisbane. Maybe. And once it arrives, I have to wait for TPG to tell me that the line's prepped for DSL functionality, so I can try to (heaven help me) install the modem and get my laptop to talk to it wirelessly.

Wish me luck. Lots of luck.

It's been a while since I've posted, that's true. I'm stuck with still no connectivity, and am in the middle of several paper chases which will eventually get me a complete spousal visa application.

I'm all right, the mister's just fine--just running a bit ragged and a little tight on net cafe cash.

Here's to hoping for a home connection before August is over!
xochitl: (success)
Our lovely houseguest was indeed owned by someone who loves her very much.
More on that behind the cut. )
xochitl: (Zoe shrugs.)
So, still no computer, but that may be remedied today. Can't promise anything, but we'll see.

And then I have to sort out connectivity. For reasons I have yet to comprehend, Australia has data transfer limits. The starter limit? Two gigabytes a month. I know. [shudder]

In different news--we've been adopted by a cat! She came over the fence a couple of days ago and walked right up to Brad as he was hanging up the wash; she stuck with us into the evening and when we fed her, she clearly hadn't eaten in a couple of days, though she was in overall good condition.

We left the back sliding door open for her all night, but she chose to come and spend it with us, purring unbelievably loudly and occasionally biting Brad's toes.

She's a little gray tortoiseshell, probably no more than two years old. She's still very kitten-y in behavior (especially when she plays). We're keeping an eye out for "missing cat" posters because she's so well behaved and in such good shape.

I've also started swimming, and I'm kinda hurting right now because I pushed it. But hey, that's what getting in shape is about, no?

More updates soon-ish. Take care, all!
xochitl: (top gear)
Hello, all! I'm safe and sound in Australia. I'm at a net-cafe, so I don't want to take up too much time, but the quick gist is that we're doing fine, we'll have a monitor for the computer sometime this weekend, and if the computer is functional then we'll have regular connectivity sometime around the 26th or so. If the computer doesn't work, then who knows? Message me directly if you want contact info and do not already have it.

I am still planning on creating a new LJ to describe my experiences adjusting to life in Australia, but that's being put on hold until we get connectivity at home.

HUGS for all, and I'll try to check mail every 48 hours or so!

Road trip!

All right, everyone--I'm off this morning to acquire a rental truck, and today's the day we pack my life into a cargo space and haul it down to the folks in the southern US.

I am all kinds of conflicted right now, and worried, and afraid, and exhausted. Perfect for driving, of course. This also means that I will be out of touch for the next several days. I'll do my best to post a quick one-liner letting people know we've arrived all right with my folks.

Take care of yourselves, okay? I'll catch you all later.

Where to start? It's late, and I'm tired, and I have a cold. Heh! But This time around, I don't have to give up my mister to the airport.

The ceremony was lovely, thugh I don't quite remember it; I see it in my mind as a sort of rapid-cut impressionist painting, bright skies, breezes, lots of green. Rocks and trees. Lots of smiles, people I'm already missing and I'm not even gone yet. There was a lot of laughter, shaky voices (mine, surely), the warmth of friends and family.

I had tunnel vision--all I really saw was my mister, which I suspect is as it's supposed to be.

So tired! I can't shake it. The cold just makes it worse, but there's still so much to do!

The reception: had to be dropped off two blocks from the restaurant due to street fair (how perfect! I mean, come on! :D ), and so many people were already gathered when I got there. So loud in there! And the fun of a unisex bathroom. I remember lots of hugs, and pictures, and wanting to talk to everyone and thank them for being there, and watching people flock to the cake/cupcakes to admire the cake-toppers, little D&D minis painted by a friend of my mister's.

I remember how lovely my bouquet was (as created by the highly talented [livejournal.com profile] jendaby), and how my cousins loved my flower "crown," also crafted by her, as were the centerpieces. I remember the food being quite good! I remember worrying if people were having a good time--how insane is that? I remember our minister talking with my mom and grandmother, and glasses tinkling, and laughter.

I just know that now I can cuddle my man pretty much whenever I want, and he's there for me while I start packing up my nearly 15 years of life in NYC, and that we've got some nice log years ahead of us to look forward to.

And no more giving him up at the airport.

More later, maybe. Very, way too tired. :D

Arrived--

My mister is here! He arrived safely, but it was a 36 hour trip. He's currently taking a well-earned nap.

I, on the other hand, am fighting off a booger of a headache after having a liter and a half of German beer. No, no, it's all right--I brought it on myself. I hope he sleeps through the worst of it, because he had as much as I did...
xochitl: (Zoe shrugs.)
I know I've asked this question before, but my brain is very sieve-like right now and I refuse to beat myself up for it.

Where can a woman who wears size 16-20 clothes get stockings--not hose, but stockings--that are held up by garters? Thanks in advance for your help...
xochitl: (WTF)
So, I had plans to write up a post for my birthday, a sort of "let's look back" kinda thing, and dwell lovingly on all the positives of my life.

I'll do that later.

For now, I must share this with you, because it cracks me the hell up: Veniero's shut down due to health code violations.

The reason this is funny is because these were the people I'd lined up to bake my wedding cake. Please note the date on the news story--it's yesterday, May 7. The bakery is 114 years old! It's not like they're amateurs or anything! What are the ODDS?! (If you go to Veniero's own website, they claim that it's their capital improvements that exacerbated the pest problem to unacceptable levels; stuff happens, and I'm willing to give them the Bennies of Doubt.)

So, I'll get to my reminiscing and whatnot after I locate another wedding cake. --[livejournal.com profile] slothshaman, got any suggestions?

...rocks. Utterly, completely, totally. I got to see him do his latest show on Sunday night, and he was in brilliant form. He was bitingly funny, but it's a self-deprecating funny, a funny that's brutal but has such a sense of perspective. It's rare. He's laughing with us, because dammit--well, it's funny.

Even better: he remains an accessible, personable, and genuinely friendly human being. I've seen him do stand-up three times. Each time, a gentleman. He talks to folks outside the room after the show's over.

Brilliant. Go see him. He totally made my week.

The Box of Happy has arrived.

The Box of Happy is the 3-DVD Hot Fuzz set.

...Squee.

---> [livejournal.com profile] deltagrl:Once we sort out just what day we're getting together, I may be convinced to bring The Box of Happy along, too.

(And I would have put up a Pegg icon, but all the HF icons are of the angry/sad/WTF variety. Top Gear is quite an acceptable alternative.)

I am writing from home. Because I managed to find a mostly new monitor for $20. Cost me more to get a car home, but seriously, I'm willing to pay it for peace of mind. Thanks to everyone for your help!

Last night, my monitor pretty much died. It was a marvellous thing, an experiment in the threshholds of ocular motion recognition.

Everything was fine. Dandy. And then, a few minutes before I was about to shut off for the night, I noticed there was a lot more black along the sides of my screen than there used to be. And my fonts and graphics looked somehwat pinched. So I adjusted the image width using the monitor controls.

A couple of minutes later--more ominous black edge. Oh, crap.

I tried changing the resolution on the monitor--no dice. And now, now I could begin to see the edges of my screen very, very slowly narrowing. So I started shutting down.

Now I started to get small, intermittent flickers all over the screen. Oh, no no no.

By the time I was into the last moments of shutdown, I could see the shrinkage accelerating, and I'd lost nearly a third of my screen width, and those flickers were constant enough to mke me concerned about exploding CRTs.

So. I could just go buy a new monitor, but I'm moving to Australia in June, and I'm probably not going to be hauling a monitor all the way over there.

Does anyone kno of an old monitor I can buy for cheap, or happen to have a spare I can borrow or rent for two months? This is a real kick in the gut for me, as I've only begin to transfer over files to DVDs for transport to Australia, among other things I need to use my machine for.

Any and all help is appreciated.
xochitl: (top gear)
And this is why.
